Fourth grade artists at both schools are in the middle of their Architecture Unit: Medieval Castles. They are applying the art elements of Line, Shape, Texture and Space. They are learning to draw" Implied Texture" by adding stone details to their castles. Students traced shapes with pencil to help them design their castles. They applied the following techniques to create a sense of space in their drawings: overlapping shapes, using curved lines to imitate a cylinder tower and turret, basic perspective by having the road to their castle lead the viewer's eye into the space, and applying perspective in the background by diminishing sizes and overlapping ground lines.

Grade 3 Artists are Ink Drawing their Jousting Knights! Students "Think with the Ink" as they draw directly with black Ink, (No pencil first! No chance to erase!) If they make an "oops!" they apply the Growth Mindset of an artist and discover they have the power to come up with some creative solutions! Students drew with the elements of Line and Shape and created a sense of SPACE through the use of overlapping and size changes. They also reviewed Line Patterns. The Hero Knight rescuing his "damsel in distress!"
Later posts will show our progress as we employ multi-media: ink, metallic colored pencils, markers, tempera paint AND scratch art to design our shields! More to come..... Again, thanks to Deep Space Sparkle Art Through the Ages Curriculum! Fifth grade artists at Columbia and Sunrise are utilizing a Grid Drawing Technique practiced in the Middle Ages and Renaissance Time to draw correct Proportions of the Art Subject. The students are learning to SEE and OBSERVE square by square the correct PROPORTIONS of their Royal Playing Card! I call it Seeing the 3 S's in RELATIONSHIP to each other: Seeing the SHAPE, Seeing its SIZE, Seeing its position in the SPACE. It is a PROCESS for training the eye and hand to draw more accurately. The students are LOVING it! (as measured by their comments!) What a fantastic start! They are doing such a Royally Great Job! Credit to the Deep Space Sparkle Lesson! All Lessons utilized for our Middle Ages and Renaissance Art History Unit come from the Deep Space Sparkle Curriculum unit: Art Through the Ages!
It was exciting to see Coach Rob creating in clay at the Las Cruces Clay Studio on Lohman. My husband, Timothy, is also taking a clay class there when we met up with Coach Rob last Friday! p.s. Coach said it was okay if I took his picture to share with everyone!
Columbia Artists in Grades K-5 collaborated to create a farewell Mosaic Collage on Canvas to THANK Ms. O'Neill for teaching them to be such great artists! Here is Ms. O'Neill waving "Hi" and saying, "Thank you for the gift of art!"
In the Las Cruces Public Schools, the Art grades are based on 3 levels: E for Excellent; S for Satisfactory and N for Needs Improvement.
Our Elementary Art Team came up with the 5 Finger goals. or the 5 C's of Art so the children could easily understand how to achieve success: Creativity: Is my work original? Content: Did I follow directions? Care: Did I use my tools carefully? Craftsmanship: Is my work carefully done? Completion: Is my work neat and complete? 5 points= Excellent 3-4 points= Satisfactory (I tell the children this is Success, just not quite Excellent!) 1-2 points= Need Improvement: Keep on trying, Keep on growing as a young artist! Art teacher, Emily Bennett and myself drove up to Albuquerque, New Mexico to put up the Las Cruces Public Schools' Elementary Art Exhibit. Over 65 students' work are represented at the Fair! The New Mexico State Fair Expo 2019 runs September 5-15th in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
